Canals

canal-servicesA canal is an artificial waterway constructed to allow the passage of boats or ships inland or to convey water for irrigation and there are a large number of these making up a network of inland waterway in the United Kingdom.  They have a colourful history and have had a number of uses over the years from irrigation to transport, the latter being particularly important during the Industrial revolution

Despite a period of abandonment, the canal system of the UK is again being used again for a number of purposes including recreational boating, and long abandoned and derelict canals are being  reopened and even new routes built. Although most canals are maintained by the Canal and River Trust there are still some that are privately owned.   There are canals in many parts of the UK and Europe, they run through towns and cities, passing by factories and private residences.

Like rivers, they too need to be monitored and cared for and require time and effort to ensure they stay clean and well managed and free,  which can clog them up a canal and make it impassable.  They can also be wildlife havens and are therefore an important part of our environment.

The traditional use of canals has not been forgotten but now canals don’t just move heavy goods. Fibre-optic cables hidden below the towpaths carry the traffic of modern information technology and also canals are used to transfer water from regions of surplus to areas where it is most needed. Such operations are very much the hidden aspect of canals, as most people see them as a place of leisure – for walking, boating, cycling, fishing and enjoying their industrial history and wildlife.
