Frequently asked questions on residential and commerical ponds at Ponds UKOver the years we have been asked many questions, but some are asked more often than others. Because of this we thought it might be a good idea to list some of these questions on our site. We have compiled the top 10 most common questions and answers relating to our residential and commerical pond maintenance, cleaning and construction services.

What parts of the UK do your Pond maintenance, cleaning and construction services cover?
Our pond and water feature cleaning and maintenance services are provided throughout Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Hertfordshire, Kent and London. Our pond and water feature construction services are available throughout United Kingdom and Europe if required.

Will you only build large Ponds and Water Features?
We build and construct ponds and water features of all sizes, no project is too small or too large. We work with commercial ponds for business parks, hotels, golf courses, parks and estates and also residential garden ponds.

What materials would you use to line a pond?
We have a variety of liners available to choose from. EPDM is probably the most common pond liner, it’s a rubber / synthetic liner. Butyl is okay but EPDM has really become the preferred liner because it’s stronger and has guaranteed properties. GCL or Geosynthetic Clay Liners are available but more suited to natural or larger ponds.

Do you guarantee your work and materials?
All “new build ponds”  come with a 3 year guarantee providing we are supplying the materials to the standards we recommend. Pond redevelopments are covered by a 1 year guarantee, we are unable to offer longer periods as we cannot guarantee other people’s work. Currently we believe we are the only company in the UK that offers a guarantee on work on ponds and water features, that alone shows how confident we are in our installation teams and projects management staff.

All materials would be covered for the given periods above but normally EPDM liners come with either a 25 year manufacturers guarantee or in some cases a lifetime cover for the original purchaser.

What pond filtrations systems do you recommend?
We are a recommended supplier for Cloverleaf filters and equipment. This has no bearing on what we install for the customer but we will only guarantee Cloverleaf. Generally despite what you see in Koi magazines and hear from shops about other manufacturers, we believe that Cloverleaf offer the best and most reliable range of pond filters, pumps and pond equipment that won’t let you down. We spend many weeks a year stripping other manufacturers’ filters and pumps and replacing them with Cloverleaf filters and pumps and all our customers are astonished by the amazing results.

When should we clean our pond?
All our ponds are minimal maintenance. Providing the filters, pumps and UV equipment is specified and  installed correctly, maintenance and cleaning would be minimal. If however you need a yearly service, either mid to late autumn or very early spring would be the best options, due to reduced fish activity and feeding. It also lowers the risks of stress to the fish due to cooler conditions.

Do you clean bottom drains and pipework during a pond service?
Yes all pipes are flushed clean and clear during all pond maintenance and cleaning procedures. 

Where do my fish go whilst you are cleaning my pond or water feature?
When we arrive on-site the first procedure will be to set up a holding tank and fill it with water from the pond. We will try to hold as much of the original water as possible so this maybe returned to the pond or water feature on completion. The fish are then kept in the quality of water they are used to, this will again help prevent stress.

Do you transport fish and how far?
We do have a specialist fish transportation service for private clients wanting to transport their Koi or other species when they move home. Currently we have taken fish from the United Kingdom all over Europe with no fatalities and all of our clients have been very impressed with the care and attention taken to make sure the fish have a safe and stress free move to their new home.

Do you offer a site survey and design service?
Yes we offer a site visit to all our customers but normally try to start with ideas over the phone to eliminate costs to both ourselves and our clients. From general conversations we can estimate the cost to build a pond and providing these figures sound good to the client we can then make a site visit.
