Ponds UK recently completed the full redevelopment of a commercial estate lake in Benfleet near Southend, Essex for Weymade Ltd.
The lake was originally lined with a PVC liner, which had seen many years of decay. Over the years it was clear the lake had not been managed as the high volume of silt and growth was clearly out of control.
The lake areas was situation on a hill, which meant when the lake was originally formed it was created by damming. This dam was now crumbling, leaking and in urgent need of repair.
Our first step was to drain the lake, remove all stocks and then dredge the lake. All of the old liner was removed and the lake was returned to its former clay state. Once we had completed this stage we turned our attention stabilisation and redevelopment of the dam wall. This was straightened, raised and widened once again by 2.5 metres. Nicospan was used to reinforce the banks.
The entire lake was then prepared and set up ready for the installation of a GCL or Geosynthetic Clay Liner. Once installed over a flat, compacted base the entire layer was covered according to the specification.
The original overflow of the lake was simply left to pour over the sides of the dam wall. In preservation of the new dam it was necessary to install a dull overflow drain which lead back to the original water source.
Heavy rain then saw the lake filled and levelling of the banks was completed in time for planting them. All pond plants and aquatic plant life was supplied by us.
Finally to finish the project, we installed two LG Sonic Algal control units to stop future build-up of algal blooms along with the installation of a fully lit fountain system using the Aqua Master, Master Series Fountain with Crystal Geyser nozzle and full control package.
The results is a beautiful clean lake that will mature quickly over the next few months.
